Charles Leadbeater talks about what he terms the “Pro-am” or professional amateur – someone who helps develop professionally what he or she does in their leisure time.  He also makes great comparisons between the closed corporate world and the open source community.

I was pleased to be able to talk recently at Leeds Trinty & All Saints College at their Development Day, about online technologies.  It is good to see that a College is being so proactive when looking at how organisations need to adapt to changing student trends and online activity.  I have great hopes for Leeds Trinity and I am sure they will become an ambassador of change in their sector.

I was pleased to be invited back to talk at SUM Conference about The Virtual Student.  This time the event was held at Loughborough Union and involved many of the great thinkers and leaders of the student union world proactively engaged in developing key online tools.

It is always great to see unions developing their use of RSS, web 2.0, creating their own ‘mashed’ content and using tools like youtube to develop new content.

I’ve been talking for some time about the free-to-use WiFi district that Google built in Silicon Valley in California called Google WiFI.

Well now London has just launched its first WiFi zone in the financial district The Square Mile.  Look out for more WiFi zoning projects in major cities near you, and soon I hope the first complete WiFi campus.

I was pleased to be able to present at the SUM conference recently and talk to the expert marketeers of the student movement about technology and how as a movement we need to move away from static websites and into a world of real online engagement.

I am really positive that the movement is listening as we talk about this changing culture and a lot are already moving in the right direction. Warwick SU are pioneering a huge review of their website to incorporate a lot of web 2.0 technology, Portsmouth Union have already started linking some their content to some of the major aggregators, and some sites, like University of West England Students’ Union, are really improving their core functionality of RSS feeds.

Next in the pipeline is Leeds Met who I will be working with to create a whole new ‘unofficial’ site out of free web 2.0 applications and in just 1 day using a few sabbs and managers. It’s going to be great.

I’m also going to be going to be at AMSU conference to fire up top level managers about why technology is so important to every aspect of their union. For those out there that also want to get involved, drop me an email talikowski@gmail.com

Tip of the week: try out netvibes

For those that attended my session at the ‘Digital Experiment’ in Yarnfield you would have seen me give a glimpse of the most radical developments in the arena of multitouch computers.

Most people now know that the new iphone will be building in what they call ‘multitouch’ into their device but as you can see from the video clip below there is far greater levels of application for this technology.

I am convinced that we will be performing similar tasks on fixed and then increasingly portable devices in the future. Mac geeks are already rumouring a touchscreen version of the imac.

This is the latest developments that brings large 2D multi-touch applications to life. CLick image to view.
